You probably want to think about which camp you belong in based on your background, experiences & desires. There are roughly 3 broad categories: AI Experiences PM, AI Builder PM, AI-enhanced PM. Here’s how to think about each category and what it takes to become one.
A. AI Experiences PM
Leveraging existing AI experiences into unique user experiences. This role is all about crafting the right experiences based on AI’s superpowers. Picture an AI Experiences PM for Meta’s Rayban AI glasses or a PM for Oura ring. It is actually easier to become an AI Experiences PM than an AI builder - things are in general more flexible when it comes to getting a job as you have to demonstrate passion / consumer experience more than anything else and you can actually “bring prior experience with you”. You have to be able to have AI awareness and technical influence but no thorough technical background is required.
Common titles you falling into this category might be:
🤖 Ranking PM:
Focuses on products that involve experiences resulting from sorting or ranking data, such as search / search engine results, feeds, or listings.
💡 You'd need: High level understanding of ranking algorithms.
🤖 Recommendations PM:
Manages recommendation engines or systems, suggesting content or products to users. For example a Spotify PM for their AI DJ products.
💡 You'd need: Understanding of recommendation algorithms.
🤖 Responsible AI PM:
This honestly falls under every single AI PM category however some companies do call this out explicitly as a separate role - it ensures that AI experiences are built ethically, with a focus on areas like fairness, transparency, and bias prevention.
💡 You'd need: Knowledge about AI ethics, biases in AI, fairness metrics, transparency, and explainability techniques.
🤖 AI Personalization PM:
Specializes in products that offer personalized user experiences based on AI. Whether it’s matching for a dating app or an automatically generated itinerary for your next trip, this is a very popular category.
💡 You'd need: Insight into user profiling, some experience in personalized experiences.
🤖 AI Analytics PM:
Works on products that provide AI-powered insights, analytics, or visualizations. For example a dashboard of your fitness activity with insights and predictions to help you reach your goals.
💡 You'd need: Understanding of predictive analytics, and data visualization techniques.
🤖 Conversational AI PM:
Manages agents, chatbots, voice assistants, or other conversational interfaces.
💡 You'd need: Grasp of natural language processing (NLP), dialogue systems.

B. AI Builder (this is me!)
